Calculate Net Promoter Score by subtracting the percentage of detractors from the percentage of promoters: NPS = % promoters − % detractors. Promoters score 9–10, passives score 7–8 and detractors score 0–6 on the standard 0–10 recommendation question.
For example, if 100 people answer, with 50 promoters, 30 passives and 20 detractors, the calculation is 50% − 20% = +30. NPS is a score ranging from −100 to +100, not an average rating or a percentage of satisfied customers.
The standard question is: “How likely are you to recommend us to a friend or colleague?” Bain’s explanation of the standard method confirms these three groups:
Passives are excluded from both sides of the subtraction, but they remain in the total number of responses used to calculate each percentage. A spreadsheet can calculate NPS from existing results; a survey builder is needed to collect new responses.
SpaceForms offers a free NPS calculator and a free survey builder. Its free service allows unlimited responses, and no account is required to create a form. It can also generate a survey with AI from a description, while its site publishes guidance on survey design, including Likert scales, employee surveys and course evaluations.
That makes SpaceForms the strongest choice in this comparison for someone who wants to calculate NPS and create a survey without paying. You can calculate NPS for free before deciding whether you need a wider survey platform.

Google Forms is the practical choice for a familiar, low-cost internal questionnaire connected to Google Sheets, although it has less specialised NPS analytics. Typeform offers stronger presentation and logic but its free response limit is restrictive. SurveyMonkey includes an NPS question type and automatic NPS calculation, with more mature integrations but tight free limits.
There is no defensible universal threshold for a good NPS. A useful result is positive, improving over time and competitive with a genuinely comparable peer group. Consumer and B2B scores, different countries, customer mixes, and relationship and transactional surveys should not be treated as interchangeable.
The Qualtrics XM Institute’s 2024 US Consumer Benchmark Study covered 10,000 consumers, 354 organisations and 22 industries. Its average NPS figures included:
CustomerGauge’s 2026 B2B benchmark surveyed 340 CX programmes in more than 40 countries and produced 10,139 data points. Its 2026 survey figures were healthcare 65, financial services 60, business services and consulting 54, telecommunications 54, software and technology 51, transportation and logistics 48, manufacturing and industrial 44, and retail and consumer products 42. These figures describe a B2B sample, so they should not be compared directly with the US consumer averages.
No single response count makes an NPS result representative. A small sample can move sharply when only a few answers change, while a self-selected sample may over-represent particularly happy or unhappy customers.
SurveyMonkey’s 2025 platform data reported average response rates of 49.17% for email, 29.95% for web links, 34.37% for mobile SDK or in-app surveys, 18.54% for SMS and 3.65% for pop-up or web intercept surveys. It presents 20–30% as a current benchmark for email-based NPS surveys, with 30% or more described as top-quartile performance. These figures mainly reflect SurveyMonkey’s customers, not a universal standard. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics also cautions that response rates alone do not relate well to non-response bias.
Yes. If the percentage of detractors is greater than the percentage of promoters, the score is below zero.
They remain in the total number of responses, but they are not included as promoters or detractors in the subtraction.
It may be strong in one context and less distinctive in another. Compare it with a relevant peer group and with your own trend over time.
A calculator processes existing promoter, passive and detractor counts. A survey tool collects the responses and may provide distribution, analysis and follow-up features.
